Who has heard that fats make you fat or that fat-free foods are the best choice? Fats are essential to a number of the body’s functions and are essential for our hormones. They are a source of essential fatty acids which the body cannot make itself. 🥑 There are four types of fat.. 1. Saturated - solid at room temperature and the type of fat often found in red meat, dairy, and coconut oil.
2. Polyunsaturated - found in most vegetable oils including sunflower, corn, flaxseed, and soybean oils. 3. Monounsaturated fat - foods like avocado, olive oil, and nuts. 4. Trans fat - made during the processing of food. Fat contains 9 calories per gram, where as protein and carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram. This does not mean that fats will make you fat. Research shows that people who eat either a moderate or a high fat diet lose just as much weight compared to people who eat a low-fat diet. All calories are the same. Excess calories from any macro nutrient will convert to fat. So what type of fat should you include in your diet? Think about eating whole foods and including nuts, nut butter, seeds, fish, avocado, eggs, olives, and olive oil. Eat a variety of whole foods that you enjoy.
